About the movie
Parvet (international title: Flocks) is a Finnish ensemble drama directed by Hannaleena Hauru and Katja Gauriloff. It premiered in Finland in October 2024.
The film follows several young adults in Helsinki over the course of a single day. Their stories intersect as they deal with identity, racism, belonging, social pressure, gender expectations, and minority experiences in modern Finland.
Main characters include:
Valeria, an Afro-Finnish football player navigating leadership pressure
Aurora, a non-binary worker struggling with invisibility and acceptance
Nora, dealing with racism in dating and everyday life
Selma, confronting fears tied to Finnish identity
Piera Niillas, a Sámi activist involved in political debates about Indigenous rights
The film was developed partly through collaborative and community-art methods, with several cast members also credited as writers, including Yolanda Correa, Stella Massa, and Senna Vodzogbe.
Stylistically, Parvet is more experimental and socially driven than mainstream Finnish cinema. Reviews were sharply divided. Some praised it for centering voices and experiences rarely shown in Finnish films, while others criticized it as overly heavy-handed or politically didactic.
The movie had a very small theatrical audience despite receiving public arts funding, which sparked debate in Finland about state-supported cinema and cultural policy. That discussion became especially active on Finnish social media and Reddit after release.
