About In The Realm of the Senses

In the Realm of the Senses (1976) is a Japanese-French erotic art film directed by Nagisa Oshima. It is one of the most controversial films ever made because it combines explicit, unsimulated sexual content with serious artistic and political ambitions. The film is based on the real-life case of Sada Abe, whose relationship with her lover ended in a notorious murder in 1936.

What is it about?

The story follows Sada, a former sex worker, and Kichizo, a married hotel owner. Their affair becomes increasingly obsessive and isolated from the outside world. As they pursue ever more intense experiences, their relationship spirals toward a tragic and violent conclusion.

Why is it famous?

The film became infamous for several reasons:

  • It contains explicit sexual activity that was unprecedented in mainstream cinema at the time.
  • It challenged censorship laws in Japan, where the uncensored version could not legally be released.
  • It sparked international debates about the boundary between art and pornography.
  • Many critics regard it as a major work of world cinema despite—or because of—its controversial content.

Themes

Although many people know it for its explicit imagery, critics often focus on its deeper themes:

  • Obsession and possessiveness
  • The relationship between love, desire, and death
  • Rebellion against social and political control
  • The limits of personal freedom and bodily autonomy

The film is often interpreted as a political work set against the backdrop of increasingly authoritarian 1930s Japan.

Critical reputation

Today, the film is widely studied in film schools and appears frequently in discussions of transgressive cinema. It remains divisive: some viewers see it as a profound exploration of desire and power, while others regard it as exploitative or excessively graphic.

Before you watch

It’s worth knowing that this is not an erotic film in the conventional sense. Many viewers report that it becomes increasingly disturbing and psychologically intense rather than titillating as it progresses. One reviewer described ending the film feeling “completely shaken” rather than aroused.

About Eiko Matsuda

Eiko Matsuda (1952–2011) was a Japanese actress best known for playing Sada Abe in the controversial 1976 film In the Realm of the Senses. Although she appeared in relatively few films, that performance made her one of the most memorable figures in Japanese cinema of the 1970s.

Early life

Matsuda was born in Yokohama, Japan, on May 18, 1952. As a teenager, she left school and joined the avant-garde theater troupe Tenjō Sajiki, founded by playwright and director Shūji Terayama. Before her breakthrough, she worked in theater, appeared in small film roles, and spent time working as a model.

In The Realm of the Senses

Director Nagisa Ōshima cast Matsuda as Sada Abe after an extensive search. Her portrayal of the real-life woman whose obsessive love affair ended in a notorious killing was emotionally demanding and became internationally famous. The film’s explicit sexual content generated enormous controversy, but critics often praised Matsuda’s intensity and commitment to the role.

Many film historians consider her performance one of the defining screen portrayals of desire and obsession in world cinema.

What happened afterward?

The role that made her famous also complicated her career. While the film gained acclaim abroad, Matsuda reportedly found that Japanese producers often associated her with the scandal surrounding the movie. She appeared in several films afterward, including:

  • Doberman Cop (1977)
  • Eternal Eros (also known as Seibo Kannon Daibosatsu)
  • Cinq et la peau (her final screen role)

She largely retired from acting after the early 1980s.

Later life and death

After leaving the film industry, Matsuda lived a relatively private life and was rarely seen in public. She died in Tokyo on March 9, 2011, from a brain tumor at the age of 58.

Why cinephiles still talk about her

Eiko Matsuda’s reputation rests largely on a single performance, but it is an unusually influential one. Film scholars often discuss her alongside the film itself because her portrayal of Sada Abe is central to why In the Realm of the Senses remains a landmark of transgressive and art-house cinema. Nearly fifty years later, her work continues to be studied in discussions of censorship, sexuality in film, and Japanese New Wave cinema.
